Community Education

Classes offered at no cost to religious or civic groups upon request:

  • Thumb Steps Up: Want to start a walking program but aren’t motivated? Deckerville Community Hospital will coordinate a walking program for your employer, civic group, or for you individually. This program is offered through the hospital’s participation in the Thumb rural Health Network’s federally grant-funded Thumb Steps Up program.
  • Partners at Heart: Julie Perry, RN, BSN, Health Educator from Partners at Heart of Port Huron Hospital/Mercy Hospital of Port Huron, provides excellent topics on taking care of our hearts that include blood pressure, cholesterol management and heart failure. She will come to your civic group or agency, or the Hospital will host a class – your choice!
  • Children’s Issues: The Sanilac County Kid’s Connection is a multi-organizational collaborative that provides services to children. If you need specific information regarding children, call the Kid’s Connection at (888) 580-KIDS. A children’s representative from the Kid’s Connection can be scheduled to talk with your civic group or agency about children’s issues or specific topics. Ask for Executive Director Nancy A Dean, MA, when you call.
  • Medicare Part D/Prescription Drug Program
  • Self breast exam: an interactive session that centers on breast lumps, why and how to check for lumps, and how to recognize lumps that may be abnormal.

  • Shaken Baby Syndrome: men in their early 20’s injure approximately 75% of the babies through shaking. Provided through a grant from the Sanilac County Child Abuse Prevention Council, Shaken Baby Syndrome classes describe Shaken Baby Syndrome, the severe physical injury that occurs to babies who are violently shaken. The class also provides tools to prevent this severe form of child abuse from occurring.

  • Older Adult Driver’s Safety: Arthritis and eye changes are just two of the changes that we face as older adults. These changes can affect our ability to drive safely – arthritis in our neck will make it more difficult to see side-to-side, and cataracts make it harder to see after dark. An older adult driver’s seminar is available through the AAA Insurance Agency, and no one will be watching how attendees drive! Just call today to schedule a class.
  • Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: Even one drink of alcohol during pregnancy can cause this devastating syndrome to occur in developing unborn babies. When born, some display characteristic physical and emotional abnormalities, yet while others may display no outward sign, their mental, social and emotional capabilities can be severely damaged. Fetal Alcohol syndrome children can have learning disabilities, any form of attention deficit disorders, and many other abnormalities. This class focuses on how and when the damage occurs, and it’s manifestations in children.

  • Folate: Preventing birth defects and protecting your heart! Folate, a “B” vitamin, is extremely beneficial to the body during pregnancy by preventing neural tube defects such as spina bifida, while also protecting our heart as we age against heart disease. Classes on folate center around what folate is and how to get enough to prevent birth defects during pregnancy and enhance your heart healthy.
